This collection is an index of soldiers from New Zealand who served in the First World War. Records may contain the following searchable information: first and last name of the soldier, place of birth, residence, recruitment district, date of death, place of burial, and the full name and residence of the soldier’s next of kin. The following additional information may be included in the records: marital status, occupation, employer, rank, military unit, and various notes or comments.<br><br>The majority of the records are from the First and Second Division of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force Reserve rolls. The First Division Roll, created in September of 1916, includes male natural-born British subjects between 20 and 46 years of age who are either unmarried or previously married with no children under the age of 16. The Second Division Roll, created from August to October of 1917, includes a classification based on the number of children of each reservist.

Alfred John Shout was a New Zealand-born soldier and an Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest decoration for gallantry "in the face of the enemy" awarded to members of the British and Commonwealth armed forces.
