The Inuit are the indigenous people of the Arctic in Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland, and Siberia. Currently numbering about 200,000, the Inuit are likely the descendants of one of the later waves of migration from northeast Asia over the Bering Strait during the last Ice Age. The Inuit culture has developed ingenious methods for surviving some of the harshest living conditions on Earth. They invented tools for hunting and fishing out of scarce materials, including dog sleds and insulated kayaks. They have also had to make certain genetic accommodations to their environment: the Inuit have developed an ability to survive on a diet that is high in animal protein and extremely high in fat with very little plant matter available for consumption.
